Best of Kenya Safari in One Week
7 Days Best of Kenya Safari, The title of this tour says it all. In just seven days you will go from a luxury hotel in the heart of Kenya’s cosmopolitan capital, on to the undulating Savannah of the Masai Mara, before spotting birds on an alkaline lake and herds of elephants wandering across shimmering open plains.
Game viewing in the Masai Mara really is the quintessential African experience. The word Mara means “mottled” in the Masai language – a reference to the wide, rolling plains dotted with the occasional acacia or shadow from the clouds above. With such surroundings, this really is one of the best places to spot the “Big Five.” There are large prides of powerful, golden lions to be found everywhere, maybe drinking from a river or lazing in the shade. Spotting these glorious creatures hunting is also not uncommon – after all, zebras, wildebeest and other grazers occur here in mind-boggling numbers – a fact which is particularly apparent during the annual Great Migration.
A quite different yet equally stunning reserve is that of Lake Nakuru. Visitors are drawn by the reserve’s famous rhino sanctuary and the unforgettable sights of thousands of pale pink flamingos lining the lake’s shores. With other terrain, including marshland, forest and cliffs, this reserve is home to a host of other animals, such as hippos, Colobus monkeys, warthogs and vultures.
Spread across the Kenyan-Tanzanian border, with Mount Kilimanjaro brooding in the south, Amboseli National Park is a great place to watch free-ranging elephants. The relatively sparse terrain means large herds are very easy to spot, especially from Observation Hill at the south-east end of the park. From here you get spectacular views of the park, and at the base of the hill lies a swamp which draws hippos, buffaloes and of course elephants.
